Just saw this in the French online news: Artists from around the world send images to the Tsunami Project, to support the Japanese people after the catastrophic earthquake.
There will be an auction and a book, all benefits will go to Give2Asia.

Le projet Tsunami a été initié d’un mouvement commun et simultané, sur les réseaux sociaux et les communautés, à l’initiative de Jean-David Morvan, Sylvain Runberg, Aurélie Neyret, Kness & Made ainsi que toute la communauté CFSL.net. Nous tenons à remercier spécialement Rémi Maynègre, premier à illustrer le sujet et qui oeuvre aujourd’hui activement pour aider les victimes à trouver de l’aide ou à évacuer les zones sinistrées.

L’idée principale étant de mettre en oeuvre un savoir faire commun pour venir en aide de manière effective aux victimes de la catastrophe via deux moyens principaux:
- une mise aux enchères des dessins originaux réalisés pour l’occasion et dont les bénéfices seront reversés à Give2Asia.
- la réalisation d’un ouvrage collectif dont les bénéfices seront également reversés à Give2Asia

La promotion de ces actions passe par un partage général de l’information et l’envoi de l’adresse du site à vos contacts.

De plus, quelques membres actifs et présents depuis longtemps sur CFSL sont au Japon de manière permanente, et notamment Goron qui vit à Sendai, et Rmk, Asahi, Bambin, Tanooki ainsi que toutes les équipes d’Ankama Japon qui se trouvent à Tokyo. "Only" a 4.1, but close. A pretty good jolt from where I was.

A Jolt and a Shake

The 5.7 earthquake struck at 9:26 at epicenter (Ocotillo)

The house was very quiet when it happened and I felt it pretty strongly. It seemed long but it was not more than 30 seconds. The house made weird noises. My heart raced.
The earthquake did not wake up the kids.

I checked the USGS' website to get some info - data coming from the USGS' computer showed up a few minutes after the quake - waiting to be reviewed by a geologist.

I imagined the whole area of San Diego and the border shaking. All that land. The forces at work. Like all the houses, roads and buildings are just feathers. The Earth can move all that without any problem.

I am off to the San Diego Art Institute to install my show. I wonder if those buildings are earthquake proof!

Peaceful day with tremor

Back from a few days in spirited Moab (very much needed).

Spent some good time yesterday at dear neighbors'. Such an amazing day.

Felt the earthquake as we were saying goodbye, standing on the sidewalk. Pretty strong, rolling. We were already outside, there was not a better place to be. We looked at our feet. Minutes after, the map showed up on the USGS' website. 6.9 upgraded 7.2 an hour later. Did not felt any aftershocks. We were in la Jolla, walking on the beach with a dear friend from New York we do not see enough, checking the small tide pools with the kids. The seals did not seem stressed out. They were all sleeping, rolling and stretching on the beach, some of the babies feeding in the soft light of the end of the day. The tide was coming back up.

Did not think about taking a screen shot of yesterday's map on USGS' site so those ones are from this morning. One interesting thing with the USGS' maps is that one can see all the smaller events occurring almost at the same time around the area where a strong earthquake hit. It shows an intense activity: 332 earthquakes on the second map. Almost all of them happened since yesterday.

Rescue

Peace here, hell there. Natural disasters strike anytime, almost anywhere. That is where we live: Earth, our planet is always under tectonic pressure. That is impossible to change.

What could be possible to change however is the way poor countries build their constructions. By now, like in any rich country, anything should be built with "anti-seismic" norms. It is not a question of money, it is a question of organization.

It is not acceptable that each time a strong earthquake hits a poor country, the result is devastating.



My dear friend Frederique is leaving Marseille, France, in a few hours, with a rescue team to help in Haiti, after a 7.0 earthquake hit Port-au-Prince. I am worried, it looks really dangerous right now with all the buildings waiting to fall.
She is an extraordinary human being and doctor. knowledge, patience, compassion, and a lot of humor too. She has an amazing experience with emergencies (specially traffic accidents).
I wish her a safe mission. I hope I will get news from her soon.

Earthquake 4.1 last night

Last night I woke up at4:35, I felt the house shaking (for me strongly) for 2 seconds. This morning I checked on the USGS website. The magnitude was only 4.1. The epicenter was 52 miles NNE from San Diego.

Last Thursday, the U.S. Geological Survey was holding a state-wide earthquake drill to raise awareness about emergency preparedness in case a 7.8. quake hit California.

One thing struck me when I was listening to KPBS last week: someone called and said that it is important to always have a pair of shoes close to the bed. If a strong earthquake hit, the windows are likely to break and there will be glass everywhere. She was saying that a doctor she knows told her about the bad injuries people had after walking in the glass at night without shoes. I do not remember which earthquake it was about.

Since my childhood I remember hearing my father talking about the San Andreas fault and the movements of the different plate tectonics. He was a structural geologist specialized in tectonics. He would draw beautiful diagrams with colors to show me and my sister how it works. The first time he went to the US he visited the area of the fault.

Now I live here, and I do not think too much about it, although it is on my mind. We'll see.

Earthquake 5.4 today

I was in the garage, painting. It lasted less than 20 seconds. I don't remember something as strong since we arrived in San Diego in 2004.
