Saturday I went with Kyle to The Garage before to go to North Park Nights. We saw Larry Caveney, who is always working on lots of interesting projects and loves to talk about them.
That night prints were on the wall for sale. I was particularly interested by Leslie Shaw's series.

The previous show was still on - Larry just added the prints on the wall for the night I believe. There were 4 pieces of work, by four artists, one in each corner of the garage. I enjoyed seeing the delicate piece by Jessica McCambly: "To consider something such as an issue or a course of action".

Dave Ghilarducci: "Figures of Speech" at Colosseum Fine Arts

I met Dave recently, on the occasion of the "Dada Dinner", part of the series "Eat your Art Out". He is passionate, has an endless energy, is very organized and a loves to cook. Dave is a sculptor and a chef!

Friday night I took my family to the opening of his latest exhibition, at the Colosseum Fine Art Gallery in the 2400 Kettner Street building. After we walked through long and narrow corridors, we finally arrived in a small - and crowded - gallery. Dave was very busy talking to a lot of people, and we did not spend a lot of time with him but the whole Dada Dinner group was in the gallery, including "Silent Alex".

We discovered 10 bronze sculptures, each presented on a simple wooden table. They illustrate poetically 10 "figures of speech": ducks in a row, wolf in sheep clothing, all dressed up and nowhere to go, idle hands are the devils playground, take the bull by the horns, caught with your hands in the cookie jar, barking up the wrong tree, watched pot never boils, balls in your court, like a bat out of Hell.

I particularly like when the figure of speech does not talk about an animal, for example "Idle hands are the devils playground" and Dave chose the animal - the rabbit in that case. A group of still rabbits becomes the ideal pray of an invisible predator. Same thing with "Caught with your hand in the cookie jar" where Dave chose a mouse to represent the person caught.

When the sentence is "Ducks in a Row", the ducks are already part of the game. But then you can remove the ducks from where they each stand so that they are not in a row anymore. The play with the sculptures is part of the poetry of the pieces and the children loved to touch and move the different elements around. Art one can touch, I definitely like that.

Corridors!

Friday night, visiting the studios in the "2400 Kettner" building: I did not remember so many corridors! The geometry of the floor plan is a mystery to me!

The "no glue" construction table

We go every Thursday to Lynn's class in North Park. There is a table the children seem to particularly like: the "no-glue" table. On that table there are materials to build things without glue. The children can use toothpicks, pieces of foam, foam plates, cornstarch peanuts, pipe cleaners, leaves, pieces of colored paper, images from magazines.

They enjoy their time, just building "things", finding the way to connect the elements without gluing them. They are very concentrated on what they are working on.

I am watching them.

I cannot help wondering about a lot of things I am doing or I am not doing for them, with them.
I would like them to love themselves and to be able to give a lot of love.
I would like them to always SEE a leaf in the wind, a bird in a tree, a shimmering river.
I would like them not to become cruel and/or cynical, destructive and/or self destructive.
I hope they will stay passionate and enthusiastic.
I hope they will always want to discover more.

I hope they are enjoying the journey, it is not a rehearsal, it is the only one we have.

Champagne!

It feels like a door just opened. It is amazing!

It is my son's birthday today, he received an email from his French grandma. She is proud that the Americans elected Obama as their new President and says that Harper will remember the date! I will certainly remember the date too!

My first vote as an American citizen and Obama is elected President! What a gift!

A few days ago the children voted at their school and Obama was elected. So when we told our children that we were kind of stressed waiting for the results of the elections yesterday, they were pretty surprised and one said: "We already voted, Obama won!"

Last night we celebrated with our American/French-American/French friends with good food and champagne. Suddenly, it was on the screen: "Obama elected President". This time there was no hesitation, no perhaps, no maybe, it was clear and loud, it was a huge wave nobody could contest.
It was great to share that moment and to witness the event together.

There are people who do not believe things can/will change and that it is absurd to be so optimistic, especially in the midst of such a worldwide mess.

We'll see. I am hopeful.
