VACANCY 3 - The Bedroom Project - One afternoon only!

Vacancy is a very interesting concept developed by Lori Lipsman. Some time to time a tenant leaves an apartment she owns in North Park. She then organizes - with not much time - a "one night" or "one day" show with a group of artists, dividing the apartment into spaces for different projects. Last time, for Vacancy 2, I've got the living room, this time I've got the bedroom. It is an exciting project to work on!

My project for Vacancy 3 is "The Bedroom Project".
Having the space of the (empty) bedroom, I decided it would be interesting to ask a group of artists/friends to send me a jpeg of their bedroom. There was no special requirements except sending a photo of the bedroom where one can see the bed and to send a jpeg large enough to be printed with a good definition. I really am interested in "site-responsive" installations, something the Vacancy series seems to be made for!

People had a week to respond - which is short. But they did! And as I was receiving the photos, I was amazed about how the whole series made sense in its diversity. Beautiful!

I printed the series of 26 photos on a very nice 11x17" matte paper. All the photos, horizontal or vertical, whatever their proportions fit in the same format, which gives a nice unity to the series. Thanks to Janine Free for the great help for printing!

"A different look at the Permanent Collection": The Summer Salon Series at the San Diego Museum of Art / Thursday, July 8, 2010

It was a great evening, everything went well: the video, the music, the projections, the workshops: Lori Lipsman's and mine, the printing of the t-shirts. In the afternoon before the event, the help to install everything in the museum was fantastic.

When the visitor came to the museum last night they got a ticket to get either a t-shirt or a limited edition print. I wanted to thank people for coming!

The whole concept of what I proposed last night was about revisiting the museum's permanent collection. I took photos of the whole permanent collection, I then transformed all the photos, keeping only some details and working only in black and white. In the hall, I used the black and white images to make banners to greet the visitors. Although they were 4x12', they did not seem giant in the space but I was happy to see that they fit nicely, they did not seem too small.

Also in the Hall, there was a video projected on the wall. I used the images to make a short 2:45 looped video with transformation of the paintings from white to black and from black to white (I will post it soon). The group Jivaro was playing in the hall. And it was great to listen to them from the second floor!




Claudia is ready to print!

On the second floor wizard Claudia (Indcision) was printing on the spot black t-shirts with the facade of the museum in white. The image comes from a photo I took and transformed. It was great that people can see the process of printing. Claudia could have print them before, but it was quite magical to pick a t-shirt and to have it printed and dried right away!

The people could chose between a t-shirt or a limited edition print (limited editions of 10 each on BFK Rives - 30 prints in total). One is the facade of the museum, one is based on "Mandragora" by Diego Rivera, the third one is based on "After many days" by Thomas Hart Benton.

My workshop took place in Gallery 16. The idea for the people participating to the workshop was to chose a painting which inspires them. To chose a detail or the whole painting and to make an interpretation in black and white of the chosen part. To keep only a few details. They had to draw shapes on a black card stock. Then they could cut the shapes and glue them on a white card stock. I would then take a picture of the person and her piece, in front of the chosen painting.

People told me it was great to work in that beautiful room, it was a "zen" workshop, engaging and open. I had a great time talking to people about the piece they were making. They were happy to be there and to share the moment. The quality of the work was amazing and the final "gallery" was really a beautiful piece!

At 8:00pm, the outside projection started, on both sides of the museum facade. I ran the same power point but in reverse order, to always have different images facing each other.



The event ended at 9:30. It took some time to put things away and I went back home tired and happy! Thank you Alexander Jarman (SDMA) and David White (Agitprop) for this great opportunity to use the wonderful space of the San Diego Museum of Art and to experiment something different, challenging and exciting!

Summer Salon Series at The San Diego Museum of Art

When I was invited a few months ago by Alexander Jarman (SDMA) and David White (Agitprop) to participate in the Summer Salon Series at the San Diego Museum of Art, I was thrilled and honored but very quickly came a lot of questions! One of them was "How will I deal with such a huge space?".

The more I was thinking about it, the more I wanted to do something linked to the museum's collection itself. I wanted to use what the museum has to offer. I spent some time in the museum's galleries, taking pictures of the permanent collection. Then, I started working on them and imagine how I could use them in projections or a video, or prints.

In the program of the Summer Salon Series, some of the Thursdays are very busy, some less. For a while I was the only artist invited for July 8. I thought it was very important to share that night with more artists and to bring together the best energy possible.

I am excited that Lori Lipsman joined with a very interesting workshop also linked to the museum's permanent collection. Jivaro, instrumental contemporary abstract group (guitar, drum and viola) will play on the first floor. Joey Hill will give a 4 part talk on Ludwig von Mises titled "A Contemporary Look at the Last Knight of Classical Liberalism: Ludwig von Mises". There will be silk screened prints made in the museum, during the night, by Claudia Hill.

"As part of the installation Canyon Shadow Play at Art Produce Gallery July 25 – Aug 30, 2010 there will be a bulletin board, like bulletin boards at trail heads, and coffee shops, where people want and need to communicate with others. I am inviting artists to display work on this bulletin board which is inspired, an interpretation and/or representation of canyons.

The pieces on the bulletin board will be for sale as a donation to Art Produce Gallery. There will be a box installed, much like the permit boxes for hiking permits. Viewers interested in a piece will be on the honor system, donating what they can to programming at Art Produce."

Today I worked with my friend Claudia Hill on the printing of the 10x10" image I've made for the "Bulletin Board", part of the installation "Canyon Shadow Play" by Lori Lipsman which opens at the end of July at Art Produce.

I took a lot of photos in the different canyons me and my family visited. Because it is the last we went to, I decided to use a photo from Canyonlands for this piece.

Silk screening is a great process, and Claudia knows what she is doing. I helped her as much as I could and I love the result with two colors. It is a short series (15 or 20). I will give some prints for the fundraiser for Art Produce, give one to my mom who saw the one I brought back home tonight and loved it (of course!), and keep a few for me.

[Tomorrow with Claudia, we are printing the series I've prepared for the San Diego Museum of Art, on the occasion of the Summer Salon Series which will take place next Thursday - its' coming fast! More on that later!]

As a sequel to the ‘Shaken, not Stirred’ show in June 2009, a group of local San Diego designers, architects, artists and educators are getting together once again to showcase recent individual projects and ideas that they have been working on. The exhibition will include a variety of media including, sculptures, drawings, digital fabrications and models.
