A Jolt and a Shake

The 5.7 earthquake struck at 9:26 at epicenter (Ocotillo)

The house was very quiet when it happened and I felt it pretty strongly. It seemed long but it was not more than 30 seconds. The house made weird noises. My heart raced.
The earthquake did not wake up the kids.

I checked the USGS' website to get some info - data coming from the USGS' computer showed up a few minutes after the quake - waiting to be reviewed by a geologist.

I imagined the whole area of San Diego and the border shaking. All that land. The forces at work. Like all the houses, roads and buildings are just feathers. The Earth can move all that without any problem.

I am off to the San Diego Art Institute to install my show. I wonder if those buildings are earthquake proof!

Saturday: Art Produce / There goes the Neighborhood / Here not There

At Art Produce for an art project



Saturday a group of kids were invited at Art Produce Gallery to participate in an art project with Lynn Susholtz. They had a blast and I was happy to be there, I enjoyed the afternoon very much.

Then we started the tour with Megan Willis, on the occasion of the event "There goes the Neighborhood" organized by Agitprop. We heard Lynn talking about her new green backyard. By then the kids were running all over the place and I decided to go back home!

"There Goes the Neighborhood": A talk at the Summer Salon Series,
San Diego Museum of Art, last Thursday night.

Thursday I went to the SDMA for the Summer Salon Series and although I arrived too late to see the performances, I went to the talk, organized by David White, Agitprop.
Agitprop is everywhere (also in Here not There at MCASD) and this is good!

At 7pm the babysitter showed up and I was on my way to see "Here not There" at MCASD in La Jolla. I was truly excited to be there! I loved it! And I loved the energy! It was packed. I saw many dear friends.

In my opinion the show is excellent, diverse, and it flows very well. Lots of things to see, to experiment, to interact with.

In the future I hope that the MCASD will organize that kind of event more often than every 20 years though. The San Diego artists are obviously worth it!

I need to go back there and to take the children.
I'll post more photos soon.

Enrique Experienced - An Art Show at the Glashaus

It was Saturday, May 29, 2010 at 7:00pm. "A hedonistic art show with DJ's, mandolins, and free popsicles". The $5 admission went directly to Mama's Kitchen, serving the needs of AIDS patients.

Good art, good friends, good music and a beautiful place. And for a very good cause. I enjoyed Perry Vasquez' interactive piece (and Perry's hat) but in the end I did not write a short poem starting with the letters C, H, A, R, O.
Device Gallery and most of the studios were closed, but we had the pleasure to see Michael Maas'.



The kids had a blast with the silent magician.

One Day at a Time

Not much time to write in the blog these days. C'est la vie!

Working on my upcoming solo show at the San Diego Art Institute in June. Not done yet. Not much time left. Enjoying the adventure very much. Experiencing one more time the same space inside the museum. Making the mock-ups of the installation of paintings on Photoshop, on a small scale. The mock-ups evolve as my project evolves. It is so amazing to be able to check everything out and try different possibilities. I can "move around the paintings".



Going to the kids' school to work on some art projects with them. Precious time spent with both classes. Learning. Watching. Listening.
Field trips too.

Almost done with a very interesting and exciting collective project. Very happy to have the opportunity to participate. More details in a few days!

Have been hiking with Lori in the blooming Tecolote canyon quite a few times now in the morning. Wonderful, very much needed.

Working on the "Summer Salon Series" night I am invited to July 8 at the San Diego Museum of Art in Balboa. Spent time in the museum looking at the space, taking pictures, thinking about what I will do there that night. Intimidating and stimulating at the same time. I am working on the transformation of images of the museum's collection, there will be projection(s) of images outside and inside the museum, a workshop.
A group of artists from San Diego are invited during the summer to participate to the Summer Salon Series, every Thursday.


The Neuroscience Institute


Dr. Ramachandran and Roman de Salvo

Went to the Neurosciences Institute Auditorium in la Jolla: there was a passionate discussion between artist Roman de Salvo and neuroscientist Dr. Ramachandran. The auditorium was packed.

Before the talk, Brian Chen, principal viola of the San Diego Symphony performed Bach Cello Suites. As I was listening to that deeply moving music, I was looking at the viola. A few pounds of material and here it is: a perfect instrument, capable of rendering an amazing range of emotions. Humans build bombs and tanks and they fight endlessly, but they can make a perfect music instrument, play and actually create peace.

Thank you Brian Chen, and thank you Dr. Ramachandran for your knowledge, your humor and your enthusiasm, and Roman for the art you create (see Nexus Eucaliptus, created in San Diego in 2006). Thank you all for the inspiration.
