Art Censorship Issues: David Wojnarowicz's "A Fire in My Belly" / screenings at Stanford University (Stanford) and MCASD (San Diego)
David Wojnarowicz's "A Fire in My Belly" has been removed in December from the exhibition "Hide/Seek: Difference and Desire in American Portraiture" at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC.
Censored for the few seconds during which one can see ants crawling on a crucifix.
The result of the censorship: lots of people saw the video, removed from the Smithsonian but not from the internet.
Next Tuesday there will be a panel discussion following the screening at Stanford University. Should be interesting.
