Big Basin Redwoods State Park

We spent a day at Big Basin Redwoods State Park, in the Santa Cruz Mountains of California. Looks like I trade cacti for redwoods! I miss the cacti but the redwoods are stunning. Big Basin is a little bit closer to our house than Anza Borrego State Park was from the house in San Diego. One hour to go to Big Basin. The last part of the road is very windy, reminding me of the ones in the forests next to the Italian border in Southern France, up in the mountains. Of course, no redwoods there.

We got there early, the forest was very quiet. We enjoyed a four hours hike through the cool woods, no important elevation. We saw many birds, deer and a banana slug.

Not far, the ocean was blanketed with a thick layer of fog, and so there was a very soft light in the forest, with little contrasts. The sun came later in the day.
